How to use a Ninja Creami: first pint step by step
Published
Short answer
To use a Ninja Creami, mix your base, pour it into a pint no higher than the MAX line, lid it and freeze it level for about 24 hours. Put the frozen pint in the outer bowl, lock on the lid with the paddle, twist the bowl into the base, and press the program that matches your base. If the result is crumbly, press Re-spin. Add mix-ins with the Mix-in program.

This page is for new Ninja Creami owners and anyone whose first pints came out icy, crumbly or uneven. It walks through a full pint from mixing to serving, with the details the quick start card skips: why the fill line matters, why the pint must freeze level, how to pick a program, and when to re-spin. The steps apply to the original 16 oz models, the 24 oz Deluxe and the Swirl. Where the models differ, such as program names, it says so.
How the Creami works
A Ninja Creami works backward compared with a classic ice cream maker. Instead of churning a liquid base while it freezes, you freeze the base solid first. The machine then lowers a fast-spinning paddle down through the frozen block while the pint stays still, shaving it into a smooth texture in a couple of minutes. That is why the freeze matters as much as the recipe. For more background see how the Ninja Creami works.
Step 1: Make the base and fill the pint
Start with a simple, tested base. The classic Ninja vanilla base for a 16 oz pint uses 1 tablespoon softened cream cheese, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 3/4 cup heavy cream and 1 cup whole milk. Whisk the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla together first, then whisk in the cream and milk until the sugar dissolves. Full recipe and a 24 oz version: Ninja Creami vanilla ice cream. This base contains milk.
Pour the base into the pint up to the MAX line and no higher. The base expands as it freezes, and an overfilled pint can stop the machine or damage the paddle. Snap on the storage lid.
Note.Use only the pints made for your model. Original and Deluxe pints are different sizes and are not interchangeable.
Step 2: Freeze it level for about 24 hours
Ninja recommends freezing the pint for about 24 hours on a level surface, in a freezer set between -7 and 9 F. Level matters: a pint frozen on a tilt or with a domed hump in the middle makes the paddle hit high spots hard. If the top freezes with a hump, scrape it flat with a spoon before spinning. Do not try to spin a pint that is only partly frozen; the center will be slushy and the result soupy.
Step 3: Assemble and choose a program
Programs differ by model. The original 7-program models have Ice Cream, Lite Ice Cream, Gelato, Sorbet, Smoothie Bowl, Milkshake and Mix-in, plus Re-spin. The Deluxe adds options such as Frozen Yogurt, Italian Ice, Slushi, Frozen Drink and Creamiccino, and the Swirl adds soft serve programs. Use Ice Cream for full-fat dairy, Lite Ice Cream for protein or low-sugar bases, and Sorbet for fruit bases. The Creami program picker and our programs explained page go into detail.
- 1
Remove the storage lid and place the frozen pint in the outer bowl.
- 2
Check the paddle is clicked into the outer bowl lid, then put the lid on and lock it.
- 3
Set the bowl assembly into the motor base and twist until it clicks into place. The Install light goes out when it is locked.
- 4
Press power, then the program that matches your base.
- 5
Wait for the program to finish and the paddle to stop before unlocking.
Step 4: Re-spin if needed and add mix-ins
Look at the texture after the first program. If it is powdery or crumbly, which is common with lean or very cold pints, press Re-spin. If it is still dry, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk and Re-spin again. Our re-spin guide and powdery pint fix cover this in depth.
For mix-ins, use a spoon to make a hole about 1 1/2 inches wide down to the bottom of the pint. Drop in chopped cookies, chocolate or nuts, then run the Mix-in program, which stirs them in without pulverizing them. See Creami mix-ins. Mind allergens such as nuts, wheat and soy in many mix-ins.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to freeze the Creami pint for 24 hours? Ninja recommends about 24 hours so the whole block is frozen evenly. Shorter freezes often leave a soft center that spins up soupy.
What happens if I fill past the MAX line? The base expands as it freezes and can sit too high for the paddle. That can stop the machine or strain the paddle. Fill to the line only.
Can I eat it straight from the pint? Yes. The pint doubles as a serving and storage container. Smooth the top flat before refreezing any leftovers.
Which program should I use for my first pint? For a full-fat dairy base like the classic vanilla, use Ice Cream. Use Lite Ice Cream for protein or low-sugar bases.
